There are few more naturally serene golf courses than the links course in Carne, County Mayo. Twenty-seven holes of links golf are played against a stunning natural backdrop, which provides a pleasantly challenging course. The greens and tee zones have emerged naturally, and the minimal human interference with the environment is distinctly noticeable.

The pure green fairways have plenty of ridges in them, but even if you are unlucky enough to bobble off course, you might actually enjoy it.

The rough around the fringes are thoroughly unspoilt, although it will be no fun trying to hack out of it. If you really get off-line with your tee shot, you will be lucky enough to get a stroll around the grassy knoll, where the long straw will be protecting your ball for you. Just try not to spend too long admiring the stunning sights of the Wild Atlantic Way – you don’t want to hold up the other players behind you.

The Carne Golf Links are a thorough challenge for players of any level, with shot selection and awareness of the elements key factors in every competitor’s round. The course was designed by the late Eddie Hackett, with many people believing it is the most challenging golf course he ever designed. The links here will provide an examination of all aspects of your game, and it is not one to be missed.
